Sydney and I have always appreciated each other’s style. Even though we have a thirty-eight year age gap, our personal style is more similar than not. Unfortunately, we are not the same size (otherwise I’d raid her closet). One of the best things that’s happened for women is that age-appropriate” dressing became the new dinosaur (I wrote an article about that). Personal style is no longer defined by our age.
We were debating the merit of socks paired with sandals or opened toed shoes. We like it. When I was in my early fifties I still allowed my style to be squelched by the “age appropriate” rules I had heard over the years. Which is unfortunate, since I’ve always loved fashion and liked to dress how I pleased. One day I bought my first pair of distressed jeans… and I felt like me again. Developing your own style without the constraint of silly rules is very freeing. So when I feel like sporting socks and sandals – I do.
I love these navy and green argyle socks paired with the Urban Outfitters checkered pants and Corso Como black suede sandals. Sydney is wearing Madewell boots with cropped black J Crew jeans. The Faye Medium shoulder bag is Chloe.
To complete my outfit I added a black turtleneck, green dangle earrings and brown leather jacket. Sydney layered two Madewell tops (a stripe and solid) and paired them with her pants and boots. Her coat is from American Apparel.

When she was in high school we would meet in the hallway only to realize we looked like twins. One of us would have to go back and change if we were going out together. That just happened again while she was visiting. Some things just never change.
We shot this just before she jumped on a plane to go home. My heart always hurts when she leaves…
